The Color Psychology of Brown

According to color psychology, these are the characteristics of brown:

  • Brown is a natural color which evokes a sense of strength and a sense of reliability. It's often seen as solid, much like the earth, and it's a color often associated with resilience, dependability, security, and safety.

  • Brown can also create feelings of loneliness, sadness, and isolation. In large amouonts, it can feel vast, stark, and empty.

  • Brown brings out feelings of warmth, comfort, and security. It's often described as natural, down-to-earth, and conventional, but brown can also be sophisticated.

My goal for this project is to highlight the power and the multifaceted nature of being an “earth toned” person in today’s world. How do people of color navigate and stand out in a positive light amongst a world dominated by white bodies? What makes earth tones special and unique? What features, angles, lighting, etc., accentuate natural beauty? How do our bodies work and match mother nature?

Each photo has its own unique color code, just like each and every one of us has our very own special makeup dissimilar to anybody else.
